Queen Street Gallery – Young Artist of the Year 2022 Competition
Young Artist of the Year is a new competition organised by Queen Street Gallery. It will be a competition designed to support and encourage the development of fine art and new media skills.
The judges are looking for artwork that reflects an artist’s interpretation of their subject or theme through the use of the pattern, shape and colour.
Eligibility: This competition is open to all young artists 5 to 21 years of age. Entries can be made in various media including the following:
- Pencil
- Ink
- Watercolour
- Acrylic
- Oil
- Pastels
- Drawing
- Mixed media
- Video
- Textiles
- Ceramics
Aims
This competition aims to encourage young people to:
- Experiment with creativity within fine art
- Use traditional or contemporary methods of fine art
- Show interpretation of their chosen topic
- express their ideas through the medium of fine art
Who can take part?
This competition is open to all young artists, schools and colleges including those that are home educated. The age range for competitors is:
Junior: 5 to 10 years old Senior : 11 to 21 years old
Competition theme and materials
This year’s theme is “Pattern Shape and Colour”
To produce a piece of 2D work on the above theme.
Maximum sizes of pieces of work per age group are as follows:
Junior 5 to 10 years old A4 to A3 Maximum
Senior 11 to 21 years old A4 to A3 Maximum
Not allowed: Prints or photographs.
The Competition
There will be two stages to this competition.
- Deadline for independent entries must be delivered to Queen Street Gallery, 33 Queen Street Neath SA11 1DN by 3 pm on Tuesday 21st December 2021.
- The contestant’s work will be displayed, and the winners announced in an exhibition at Queen Street Gallery in January 2022.
Suggested timescales for Local Schools and Colleges:
September 2019 Approach local schools to gauge interest
February 2020 Formalise the process for the competition to take place. Suggest that the school round could take place in October, November, December subject to the school timetable.
September 2021 Shout out call for Entries via social media, schools, and colleges. Entry forms will be available from 1st October 2021.
21st December 2021 All artwork entries need to be delivered to Queen Street Gallery on or before 21st December 2021.
Competition Final January 2022
First place: Showing work in the gallery’s Summer Exhibition
Second place: A voucher to the value of £25 to be spent at Studio 40, Queen Street Gallery.
6 Runners Up: 3 from each category’s work will be printed as cards and sold on behalf of a charity.
The Winning Entries submitted for the final must have the signed Entry Form accompanying the entry.
Judging the competition will take place in late December 2021. The exhibition opening and presentations will take place between 2pm and 3:30pm on the first day of the exhibition at Queen Street Gallery in January 2022.
The judges’ decision will be final.
The winners and selected entries in each age group will be displayed in an exhibition at Queen Street Gallery in January 2022.
Prizes will be given to the winner in each age category. Prizes for the winning competitors will be available at the opening of the exhibition.
Competitors
Students and schools may enter the competition organised by Queen Street Gallery through their school and college or independently through the Queen Street Gallery website.
Individual competitors, schools, colleges, and other organisations can participate in this competition.
