Ensuring Safety in the Hydrogen Industry: A Critical Priority for the UK

As the UK transitions towards a greener energy future, hydrogen is emerging as a key player in the nation’s strategy to achieve net-zero emissions. However, the safe handling and use of hydrogen are paramount to its successful adoption. This article explores the importance of safety in the hydrogen industry and highlights the role of NPTC Group’s hydrogen safety qualifications in fostering a secure working environment.

The Importance of Hydrogen Safety

Hydrogen, while a promising energy source, poses unique safety challenges due to its highly flammable nature and the potential for leaks. The UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has been at the forefront of ensuring hydrogen safety, conducting extensive research and developing regulations to mitigate risks. The HSE emphasises that understanding the causes and consequences of accidental hydrogen releases is crucial for preventing and managing risks effectively.
Megan Hine, Safe Energy Transition Business Development Manager at Draeger Safety UK, underscores the need for rigorous safety standards in the hydrogen sector. Megan points out that the safety risks in the hydrogen industry are comparable to those in the oil and gas sector, necessitating comprehensive safety procedures to build public trust and secure investment. Without these measures, the UK’s ambitious goals for a decarbonised energy system by 2030 could face significant setbacks.

NPTC Group’s Hydrogen Safety Qualifications

To support the safe integration of hydrogen into the UK’s energy landscape, NPTC Group offers specialised hydrogen safety qualifications. These courses are designed to equip individuals and organisations with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the evolving green energy sector safely.

“We are very pleased to be working with the NPTC Group of Colleges. As well as providing staff and students with the knowledge they need to work safely with and around hydrogen, the insight they will gain will also support them as they consider careers within the green energy sector.Working closely with education providers, industry leaders and policy makers, we know that the transition to more sustainable ways of working will create opportunity. College Groups like NPTC will be in the best position to make the most of this and to drive positive change to the benefit of everyone involved.”

Level 1: Award in Introduction to Hydrogen Safety Practices
This introductory course provides a foundational understanding of hydrogen’s role in the energy landscape. Over two days, participants learn about hydrogen production methods, safe storage and transportation requirements, and the principles of risk assessment related to hydrogen. This course is ideal for anyone interested in the green energy sector and requires no prior knowledge.

Level 2: Award in Advanced Hydrogen Safety Practices
Building on the Level 1 course, this three-day program delves deeper into hydrogen safety. Participants gain a detailed understanding of advanced hydrogen production methods, in-depth safety practices, and comprehensive risk assessments. This course is suited for professionals, educators, and apprentices with prior knowledge or potential direct contact with hydrogen.
Both courses are delivered face-to-face or online, offering flexibility to meet diverse learning preferences. Upon completion, participants receive an Ofqual-regulated qualification, enhancing their credentials in the green energy sector.

“We are thrilled to introduce these new qualifications, which will empower businesses with the knowledge and skills to harness hydrogen technology effectively. These courses represent a significant step towards a sustainable future, providing essential insights into hydrogen safety, production, and implementation.By equipping businesses with these qualifications, we enable them to understand the potential benefits, mitigate risks, and leverage hydrogen technology to enhance their operations and drive innovation.”

– Jayne Jones, Head of Business Development – NPTC Group of Colleges
